He Follows
He follows me around like a toothache
Easy to ignore but hard to chase away
I want to alleviate the awkwardness so I say
Hey, isn’t this a beautiful day
He follows me around like a lost cat
Sometimes happy mostly sad
I laugh and tell him I don’t have any cake
Perhaps he should go and find a rat
He follows me around like a headache
Maybe a good nights’ sleep is all it takes
I slept and slept but still he stays
And keeps all the magic and good things at bay
He follows me around like a mistake
Impossible to undo difficult to forsake
Honestly this is such a cliche
Overused, somehow effective in many ways
He follows me around like a heartache
Akin to the invisible noose around my neck
Oh, it is normal to miss a gift you never had
To weep for a soul you never met
He follows me around like a menacing snake
A ghost of the past that refuses to stay dead
I concede by saying I’m in desperate need of a break
His smile vanishes as fast as heat to snowflake
He follows me around like a toothache
Distant dreams of those sweet lost days
I dismay, for all I have done is evade
When I should have gladly embrace
Bade him farewell and stop being afraid
His face is something time cannot fade
I look up at the sky and ask
Am I finally awake?
